5 SEO Tweaks Every Webpage Should Have

Basic Core Principles of Website Development

Having great content is a winning component to every online adventure. Sadly, great content isn’t always enough. In comes the webmasters, SEO’s and online gurus who are all finding ways to tweak your website pages to be the most effective and dominant in the SERP’s (search engine results pages) and your niche marketplace.

Yes, this can become obsessive, compulsive and never ending, but here are five things that you should always cover first and are actually not that difficult:

Your Web Page Address Title

This is the part that shows up in your URL window (for any less fluent types, this is where you see the http://www.YourWebsiteAddressHere.com part in your interent browser). It represents the virtual address of the particular page.

It is usually a good idea to include a keyword if possible and/or relevant or significant identifying words here. Use of “pretty” URL’s has become more common, however there are many whom don’t know about the “relevancy” factors that are at play in the Search Engines (i.e. Google, Yahoo, Bing) and the human psychology of the soon to be “clickers”.

Maximize this as best you can without “overdoing it”.

Be smart, be tactful and think like a searcher when in doubt. If it looks logical and relevant to what the person is after or searching for, then the odds of getting clicks will increase…Yes, you are right, this is good.

Page Name Title

Now the page “title” is usually going to contain, at least partially, the page name (i.e. About, Contact Us). There are limits, however, when crafting your title tag elements. A major limit is the amount of characters that actually show up in the search results.

Writing a good title tag is liking writing a good ad (i.e. PPC campaign ads). This is the part that is going to show up in the search results when someone is searching for what you have to offer back on your website…for that particular page.

If you are among the lucky few, you’ll be on the first page and your Title tag will do it’s job and sell the click . If done wrong (ex. untitled document; welcome; our website; etc.), it can really work against you, not to mention your webmasters rep…Give the searchers what they are after and help them know that your page content contains what they want, are searching for and in need of!

This brings us to…

Website Page Description

Yeah!

Now the page description is usually used in most search results listings. This is not always true though, but should be given very special attention non-the-less.

Remember you can always adjust/tweak these as you need to.

Again, you have a limited number of characters to use that will show up in the results listing and they need to sell (persuade) the click!

If you think of them as an advertisement for the page, then you will usually have a better description than most of your competition. Speak to your potential “click-through’ers” from a perspective that relates with them. If they (the web surfing searchers) feel that they are going to get what they are searching for, by clicking on your listed result in the SE (search engine), then they will more than likely do so.

Remember that all 3 of these SEO tweak tactics are grouped together and are your front line of what shows up in the listed results. Do you know what yours are telling searchers? (I’m always open about improvements with mine and you should be with yours too).

If and when all three show a relevancy to what the person is looking for and/or persuade them to click…

1. it is more likely to show up (granted your actual page is about what you are saying it is about) in the top listed results for the search term and

2. your page listing (search result) is more likely to get clicked on.

Is this rocket science? No.
Can you mess it up? Yes.
Can it be fixed? Yes.
Can it be tested? Yes.
Should you analyze them for efficiency? Yes.

Should you do it right away? Probably, but first let’s look at these other two factors…

Website Image Tags

Contrary to the belief and practice of many, there are actually 2, not just 1, important tags that you can and probably should be using for most of the images on your website.

Most everyone is familiar with the importance of the “alt” tag, but for some reason, not everyone takes advantage of the “title” tag powers! The “alt” tag is going to tell a website visitor what the picture that should be there is about…if it doesn’t show up. The “title” tag is going to tell us what you are saying the picture is about, views as a “tool tip box” AND can work very similar to our final SEO tweak…

Can you utilize this tag to make your site more relevant? Yes.
Can you use keywords in the “title” tag? Yes.
Should you go crazy and stuff a ton of keywords into the “title” tag hoping to get better listing results? No.
Can you mess this up? Yes.
Can you fix it? Yes.

Now before you switch gears and begin tearing up and tweaking out your site, let us have a look at this doozy right here…

Keyword Inter-Linking Anchor Text

I’m sure that you have seen this done in many different ways. Simply put, it is a very, very, very important part of your website.

When you see a link like any of these: Internet Services Menu; Click Here; more…; Website Development Services; or Click Here Now, you may notice that they all go to the same place. The difference lays within the parameters for which you would best like the proceeding page to be known for AND what is most likely the best way to encourage your website visitors to click (if that is the goal).

These words count as a “vote” towards the relevance of the page that they link to. So, if I call the page Internet Services Menu, and I link to the page from within my site with the text “Internet Services Menu”, then I am essentially casting a vote that says that this page you will end up on, when you click these words, is about Internet Services Menu. Now, if this were something that I was wanting to be know for and show up in the search results for, then this tweak will prove to be a very important part of my website ranking development also.

More so, using words that are your keywords and linking between pages on your website with them is a sure way to prove your relevance not only to the search engines but to your website visitors.

When your website visitors enjoy what they read on your website, they will in turn, hopefully, use the relevant keywords that they believe your site is about to “link back” to your site or “bookmark” your site.

Hopefully you will find these SEO tweaks to be helpful in your online pursuit to happiness.
